Silence is goldenAugust 18th, 2013 |
Today's musing is on silence. Why do we even have that phrase "silence is golden"? Is it really?
Well, I'm going to say 'yes' and even more so lately than in the past. One obvious reason is that the world today is a very noisy place. Hard to avoid the clamor no matter where you are. And when something's rare, as silence now is, it becomes valuable.
But more than just silence as opposed to noise, silence in speech is "a good thing". Basically, when you've got something worthwhile to add to the conversation, then by all means say it. But if not, don't just fill up space repeating what's already been said. Be the person who is listened to precisely because when you speak, everyone knows there's pearls on the way.
And the last point of silence is more in what you choose to avoid. You can chit-chat for hours on end but after you're through what have you accomplished? Not much. So by providing silence by your absence, and avoiding the time sink of gab for gab's sake, you free yourself to work on the tasks that matter.
And that's worth shouting about!
